Is "Online" for real??

Many of our young people are spending much of their time in cyber-worlds...they interact, build and even buy and sell cyber-property (the worlds first cyber-real estate millionaire - in Second Life - was announced a year ago!).

Many have built cyber-presences through sites like Facebook, My Space and Piczo.

What is it that draws young people here? Are their on-line identities part of the "real" them? Is on-line even a "real" place?

Your thoughts?

  1. Cyber-worlds.. nothing but a fantasy!
i don't think that on-line identity is the same as "real" life identity. There are so many advantages/disadvantages to hiding behind a computer screen. You can make up a whole new identity for yourself. (You can make up your name, age, and you have the advantage to show a false picture of yourself!) I know of a few people that do it. They are doing it because they wish to keep there identity private. It makes me wonder what exactly they are hiding? Do I really want my child subjected to this? NO. Children are making up their age just to join facebook! People are wasting so much time in these "cyber worlds" that they are neglecting the real world around them.

  2. The world of internet to many youth today is second nature. The kids today can use their imagination on the computer and unlike their parents generation having to use imagination to have fun playing outdoors. I am sure if, like the youth, I grew up with the internet I would be less likely to adventure on mind own and create my own fun. I have tried second life and The Sims, it seems that it takes up a lot time to build your character. I rather stick to my video games. Some advantages for these type of games is you can be whatever you want to be. Live a life that you can do not live and may fantasize about.

  3. "Online" being real is like peoples personalities the responses are varied and subject to opinion. People fall on all ends of the spectrum. Some like to pretend they are someone or something else, while others are themselves and nothing else.

Can it be "real" sure, is it always going to be? no.

  4. I think to the people that feel they dont belong yes to them cyber world is real. especially with those games that they can be who ever they want. so if someone feels they are ugly well that person they create will not be. No one know what that person really looks like so they feel that they belong in that world instead of the real world. But to them the real world is nothing. Like MueyTy said; Can it be "real" sure, is it always going to be? no. Not for everyone anyways.

  5. I agree with Muey Ty the part where he sayd that some people may make up this fantasy person and others are for real. I think that computers give people the courage to be more open and free to express who they really are, because nobody can judge them. That does not mean everybody is the same, but we have to remember that its that way for everything some people use and abuse and others don not. So yea I think it can be real at times.

  6. “Online” in my opinion is, the extended real world that everyone is afraid to live in reality. Like Cara stated, People have the courage to be more open and express themselves online, but I have to disagree with Cara on her second part of the statement because, I do believe that people are judged ,according to what they are putting on the internet, especially when they announce their private lives on facebook. For example, in Mrs. Cole’s Blog comment, she stated that her friends are changing their identities! What are they hiding??? She formed an opinion of them and they are her friends….
As I stated in class, I love face book, and the internet, it’s a perfect way to stay “connected with friends and family, however, when I was growing up, we put our private lives and comments into a diary. I know, you may say “passe” but at least no one can assume something other than what you really meant, and at the same time you get to vent, in private.
So, is online real?, Oh ya, more real than what we think.

  7. "online" some people really say who they are online and let the world know who they are, but other make up and identity for who they wish they really were.
